WOODSTOCK.

LEAP YEAR ANNOUNCEMENT.
As this seems to be a year of cheap sales and reduction in prices, I shall, beginning with March 1st, sell
Watches, Clocks, Jewelry, Wedding Rings, &c., &c.,
as cheap as the cheapest. Not being as wealthy and philanthropic as some parties, I cannot afford to give a $13 article far $8, but will sell at the smallest living profit.
Engraving a Specialty. I am also agent for the Fitchburg Acoustic Telephone, with or without bells.
Give me a call and be convinced that this is a bona fide cheap sale, and not an advertising dodge to get rid of a lot of shop-worn goods.

The “Saltbox” House (previously 135 Westmorland Street)

135 Westmorland - The"saltbox" house by George Taylor. Photo courtesy of the Toner Family.

A little something from our 2009 Annual Report.

By Koral LaVorgna

The “saltbox” house which used to stand at 135 Westmorland Street was built in two stages. The back part, the original portion, served as a station for the stage coach that went to Woodstock. William Donaldson, an Irish immigrant, later added the front part of the house which faced onto the street.

The Donaldsons operated the stage coach, and son Robert Donaldson eventually shifted from coach operator to railway engineer. The Donaldsons sold the “saltbox” house to John Toner in 1878, and generations of Toners resided in this dwelling, including Charles Toner and his daughter, Annie Toner.

2009.13.2: In October, the YSM acquired a locket and chain that use to belong to Annie Toner who use to live in the Saltbox House. Annie died on May 22, 1906 at the age of 17 of consumption. Annie was the daughter of Charles Toner and Margaret Jeffery.

An iconic image of this house was captured by George T. Taylor (1838-1913), the famous Dancing Bear photograph, c.1891; the glass negative was donated to the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick by the Toner family. Standing at the doorway is Evelyn Toner, and she is holding Fred Toner in her arms. The child standing next to Evelyn is Harry Toner. Peeking out the window are Jack Toner (left) and Clement Toner (right). The “saltbox” house was moved to Kings Landing where it now functions as an Interpretive Education facility.
