CANON HEBB PRESENTATION

Please join us on Thursday, January 17 at 7:30pm at Old Government House for a presentation by Canon Hebb:

Two New Brunswick Men and Their World War I Experience

Canon Hebb describes his talk:
My talk will be about two New Brunswick men and their WW1 experiences: Lieutenant Frank Lawlor of the 132 Battalion and Arthur Harrison of the CAMC.  I will outline where they were from, what unit they joined, their training experiences, their trip overseas, their impressions of England and their service on the continent.  My talk will be based almost exclusively on original documents, e.g., attestation papers etc. but my primary resource will be the personal letters of the soldiers involved.  The letters these two men sent home are not in any public collection and thus constitute a primary resource not previously seen by the public.  Hitherto they have been family treasurer only!  These men’s letters offer a unique glimpse into the personal experiences of two New Brunswickers caught up in the world altering events of the Great War of 1914-1918.  I trust your group will find the talk as interesting and engaging as my experience of the research!

A reception will follow the presentation. Non-members are cordially invited.

York Sunbury Historical Society Program: The New Brunswick Mat Registry

Inch Mat, Boston Sidewalk
Hooked by Mrs O. B. [Liza] Davis
Grand Falls NB • circa 1915

Join the York Sunbury Historical Society as they learn about the New Brunswick Mat Registry (NBMR) with Doris Norman.  New Brunswick mat hookers have talked for years about the importance of documenting the hooked mats that cover the floors of New Brunswick homes. These are mats made by our grandmothers, mothers and friends to keep their families warm and bring colour into their homes. The presentation will take place on November 15th at 7:30pm in the basement of Government House followed by a reception. Programs are free and open to the public.

The New Brunswick Mat Registry is holding a Mat Registry at Government House in Fredericton, New Brunswick from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, on November 17, 2012

The New Brunswick Mat Registry–a network of volunteers from all regions of the province, has already documented over 200 hooked mats–some as old as 100 years, since its launch in 2010. These mats were photographed, examined in detail and the owners interviewed to capture the individual stories behind them.

For years the rug hooking community has talked about the importance of documenting this part of New Brunswick’s material history—unlike other Atlantic provinces, no provincial registry has existed until now. Everyone who owns a mat made more than 25 years ago in New Brunswick or by someone born in the province is invited to share this heritage by participating in a Registry.

Hooked by Aldea Pellerin-Cormier Foyer, St Antoine, NB at age 93

The Registry includes development of a database and a Virtual Exhibit in partnership with the New Brunswick Museum.

The public is invited to drop in at Government House between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm to learn more about the New Brunswick Mat Registry. If you have a mat to register an appointment is required. Contact Mary Grant (506-459-8525)
