Commemorating the epic march of
New Brunswick’s 104th Regiment of Foot

February 16, 2013 is the 200th anniversary of the departure of New Brunswick’s 104th Regiment of Foot from Fredericton as they started their epic 1100 kilometre march to Kingston, Ontario. On Thursday 21 February 2013, Gary Campbell will tell us about the original march and how it was conducted. It was a triumph of man over nature! From there, he will look at how the march has been commemorated over the past 200 years. The emphasis will be on the 150th anniversary in 1963 and the events that are presently ongoing to commemorate the 200th anniversary. Please join us as we learn more about the epic march of the New Brunswick’s 104th Regiment of Foot.

A reception will follow the presentation. Non-members are cordially invited.

A York Sunbury Museum project … exhibiting the history of Fredericton and central New Brunswick!

From Our Collection: New Brunswick Fencibles Officer’s Coatee

Officer's coat of the New Brunswick Fencisbles (1969.2547.1)

Officer's coat of the New Brunswick Fencisbles (1969.2547.1) circa 1808-10. Probably the New Brunswick Fencibles unit in existence 1803-10.

Recently, I received a telephone call from that National War Museum enquiring about a War of 1812 military tunic.  I have been told that the York Sunbury Museum owned one but I had never seen it.  With the anniversary of the War of 1812 fast approaching, museums are starting to plan exhibits and are taking stock of what artefacts are available.  The Museum has a few objects reportedly from the 104th Regiment who fought during the War of 1812.

Fredericton is where the 104th regiment started its historic winter march to Kingston in 1813.  Started in 1803 and based in New Brunswick, the regiment was established as Fencibles, it then became in 1810 the 104th Regiment of Foot in the British Army; however, they only served in North America.  In March of 1813, during the War of 1812, the regiment marched on foot from Fredericton to Kingston.  The march took 34 days and lasted almost two months; it was necessary in order to protect Upper Canada, now Ontario, from the invasion of the United States.

Officer's coat of the New Brunswick Fencibles (1969.2547.1 back)

Scarlet wool cloth with white collar, cuffs (round) and turnbacks. White braid lines to buttonholes on collar, lapels and cuffs. Stylized trefoil or fleur de lys decoration in silver embroidery on turnback.

When the United States attacked, the British forces were outnumbered and needed the 104th Regiment to come to their aid.  This action united the separate provinces of British North America against a common enemy; it also showed the military importance of the St. John River Valley to the rest of what would become Canada.  The 104th Regiment of Foot was ordered to disband in 1817; Britain wanted to reduce the strength of her army because of peace that had been established in Europe with the imprisonment of Napoleon.

Officer's coat New Brunswick Fencibles (1969.2547.1)

Silver domed buttons with crown surrounded by "New Brunswick Regiment".

After a very enjoyable morning to searching through the textile collection with a volunteer, I managed to find the coatee (a short close-fitting coat).  The York Sunbury Museum is planning to host its own War of 1812 exhibit and the scarlet officer’s coat in the York Sunbury Historical Society Collection will definitely be a part of it.

“This collection is made up of the correspondence of the Montgomery-Campbell family, dating from 1850 to 1964.  It is divided according to family member.  The bulk of the material (64/1) covers the career of Colonel Henry Montgomery-Campbell (1859-1933) O.B.E., V.D., of Apohaqui, Kings County, and Fredericton.  He commanded the 8th Princess Louise Hussars, 12th Infantry Brigade; organized the 64th Battalion, C.E.F., and commanded an Imperial labor brigade overseas in World War I.  His papers include his military commissions, certificates, and correspondence; official military records; personal and business correspondence; some biographical information, clippings; and photographs.  Information on his wife, Laura (Winslow) Montgomery-Campbell (1864-1953) is also included.

The papers of Henry’s brother, Brigadier-General Herbert Montgomery-Campbell (1861-1937) are found in 64/2.  He attended the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, and was commissioned with the Royal Artillery in the Imperial Army.  He served in Africa during the Boer War; in India; and commanded the 46th Divisional Artillery in the Great War.  He was wounded in 1918, and at the close of his military career lived at Kelston Park, Bath, England.  Included in this section are his military papers, biographical information; clippings, and photographs.

Other family members represented in the collection are Herbert Montgomery-Campbell (son of Henry) who was killed in World War I; Constance Montgomery-Campbell (daughter of Henry); and Sophia Storie (Saunders) Montgomery-Campbell (mother of Henry and Herbert).  Additional items, which relate to the family in general are clippings; photographs; papers relating to “Fox Hill” at Apohaqui; and the sale of lands in Fredericton.  Herbert and Henry Montgomery-Campbell were great-grandsons of Captain John Saunders, Loyalist and Chief Justice of New Brunswick–hence the frequent reference to the “Saunders” name in this collection.

The Montgomery-Campbell photographs are described in this series and have been transferred to the Photograph Section.

This series measures 20 centimeters.”
