Father’s Footprints: a colouring book by the York Sunbury Museum

“Father’s Footprints” is a colouring book for young children that tells the story of Hannah Ingraham (1772-1869) and her experiences as a Loyalist.  The colouring book accompanies our Loyalist Exhibit at the York Sunbury Museum created by Robert Dallison. 

Written by Koral LaVorgna and illustrated by Melanie Cormier  the colouring book was created to introduce young children to New Brunswick’s Loyalist history.  The colouring book is based on an excerpt from “Hannah Ingraham, 1772-1869: Her Reminiscences” by Carolyn Atkinson published in The Officers’ Quarterly Vol. 13 #4 & #1.  

Hannah was born on 21 April 1772 in New Concord, New York and died on the 18 March 1869, Bear Point (near Fredericton) New Brunswick Canada.  Hannah never married and lived with her brother Ira.  The house that Ira built is now in King’s Landing and the York Sunbury Museum has several artefacts from the Ingraham family, including her father’s wallet.  Hannah kept a diary during the Revolutionary War.  It survived several years and was kept in the Library and Archives Canada until it was lost.  Luckily, a transcribed copy of Hannah Ingraham’s diary survives.  Hannah’s memories provide a glimpse of Revolutionary War through the eyes of a young girl.  In her diary Hannah talks about her Father’s time away fighting in the war and his time in jail, she wrote about when he came home, how her family fled for Nova Scotia (which included New Brunswick at the time) and setting up a new home in what became Fredericton New Brunswick. 

We chose “Father’s Footprints” as the title of our colouring book because Hannah describes how she and Ira had to follow her father’s footprints in the snow to the log cabin that he built in Fredericton.  It was a very small, one room cabin without windows and a chimney but was the most wonderful home for her at the time.  Before the cabin Hannah and her family had lived in a tent.
