The history of the Baptists in Fredericton dates back to about the beginning of the 19th century. In 1792, the first baptism (immersion) took place here, the first candidates being 2 or 3 colored persons and the administrator on David GEORGE, a colored preacher from Shelburne, N.S. who had received a licence from the Lt. Gov. to preach to the people. Ten years later, six persons were baptized in the river by Elde Theodore S. HARDING who with Elder Elijah ESTABROOKS are said to have preached on that day in the Play House, Waterloo Row. In 1813 Jarvis RING, William WILMOT, father of Judge Wilmot, Amasa COY, H. Alline HARTT and others began to build a meeting house for the Baptists in Fredericton which was completed and occupied in the following spring. It stood on the north side of King Street, below Regent. The church was organized on 1st Jan. by Elder E. Estabrooks and consisted at first of only 13 persons, who met for the purpose at the residence of Jarvis Ring. The successive pastors of the Fredericton Baptost Church, with the dates of their induction are as follows: Elijah ESTABROOKS, 1814; T.S. HARDING, 1820; Charles TUPPER, 1825; David HARRIS, 1826; Robert DAVIS, 1830; Fred K.W. MILES, 1834; Ingraham E. BILL, 1840; William HALL, 1843; Samuel ELDER, 1845; J.D. CASWELL, 1853; George SEELY, 1855; H.P. GUILFORD, 1857; J.C. HURD, M.D., 1860; Chas. SPURDEN, 1867; T.H. PORTER, 1870; A.F. STEVENS, 1878; F.D. CRAWLEY, 1880; J.D. FREEMAN, 1894. (see original)

One of the best known residents of St. Mary’s passed away last eve. in the person of Mrs. Samuel DAYTON, who has been suffering from cancer for the past year and confined to the bed most of the time since April last. She was the second wife of the late Samuel DAYTON, who carried on a successful business in St. Mary’s, which business is now conducted at the old stand by Mrs. Dayton’s sons, George S. DAYTON and Henry F. DAYTON. A daughter also survives her, viz. Miss Susan DAYTON who lives at home. The deceased was 56 years old and a native of Long’s Creek. She was a sister of George GILMAN of this city. The funeral will take place tomorrow 2 o’clock. At 1:30 p.m. Samuel DAYTON passed away and by his death St. Mary’s loses one of its oldest and most respected citizens. Mr. Dayton was 70 years of age, being born in 1824 on the old Dayton homestead in Douglas (York Co.). When 28 years of age he married Miss M.L. HANSALPACKER. The next year he started business in St. Mary’s and for forty years occupied the building which was destroyed in the fire of 1893. His first wife lived 13 years and of the union were born eight children. Five of these are now living: Benjamin DAYTON, Boston; J. Milton DAYTON, Edmundston (Madawaska Co.); W, Bruce DAYTON, St. Mary’s; Mrs. Hiram KILBURN, Presque Isle, Me.; and Mrs. Edward COLPITTS, Pleasant Vale (Albert Co.). In 1868 he married Miss Olivia GILMAN, sister of Ald. George GILMAN of this city. From this union three children survive their father: Miss Susan C. DAYTON, Geo. D. DAYTON and Henry F. DAYTON. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon 2 o’clock from his late residence, St. Mary’s and interment will be made in the provate cemetery on the Dayton homestead, Douglas. Mr. Dayton was for many years a prominent member of the Methodist church, but of late years has been compelled to discontinue active work.

“This series includes documents — mostly day books — relating to various businesses dating between 1799 and 1929.  The merchants who kept many of the day books have been identified by research and in those cases, the merchants’ names are in square brackets.  Notice also that the ledgers were often used by the merchants themselves or others at a later date to record personal and/or official information, e.g. 41/3, 41/7 and 41/19.  This series measures 65 centimeters.”

1  Bond of James E. Marsters, coach maker, Saint John, to Georgina C. Wheeler, Sussex; March 19, 1863.

Charles Sidney Burpee was born in Sheffield, Sunbury County, New Brunswick, on June 18, 1817, the son of Jeremiah Burpee and Elizabeth Stickney.  He was educated at the common school in Sheffield, and eventually became a farmer.  He was married twice: first to Mary Perley and then to Charlotte H. Perley.

He unsuccessfully contested the Sunbury County seat for the House of Assembly in 1854.  In 1867, he was elected to the House of Commons as a member of the Liberal Party for Sunbury County. He was re-elected in 1872, 1874, 1878, and 1882.  At the General Election of 1887, he was defeated and retired from active politics.  In 1900, Burpe was made a member of the Senate of Canada, and sat until his resignation to become Commissioner to the Paris Exposition.  Burpee died November 29, 1909, at Sheffield.  He was survived by two sons.
